Our Story

Silence is the inspiration for Innovating for Children, LLC. The silence of children that struggle to learn language and communication skills. By age four our son, William, had a limited vocabulary of 25 sounds and words that he could communicate with. If you can imagine trying to function with 25 words in life, I am sure you would agree that would be incredibly frustrating. When he was five years old we noticed that he learned to doggy paddle simply by watching a home video of his brother. From that moment on it was clear that the video recorder was our ticket to teaching William how to negotiate his world. Learning from videos became a far superior way to learn than classroom instruction whether in regular or special education. The first edition of Video Modeling: A Visual Teaching Method for Children with Autism was the result of that body of work over 20 years ago and became our first product to be sold to help teachers and other families educate their children.

The book caught the attention of the Anne Arundel County Public School system in Maryland. They hired me and they invited me to present for them at the 2002 Maryland Speech-Language-Hearing Association conference and the DEC 2002 - Division for Early Childhood of the Council for Exceptional Children conference in San Diego. With a degree in International Relations from the University of California, Davis, but not in education, it was an honor to present my experience with video modeling in the grand ballroom. The seminar was well received and the book has been referenced in various peer reviewed works. The organization Cure Autism Now was also intrigued by our use of video modeling. They invited us to exhibit at their innovative technologies conference in California in 2000. The experience of working in education itinerantly in the homes of preschool students gave me more insight into how to reach children that were struggling with traditional teaching methods. Our program was supplementary to the standard preschool program, focusing on one-to-one instruction based on the principles of applied behavior analysis.

We moved to the Tampa Bay area in Florida in 2003. William was 10 years old then. For twenty years the innovative ideas I developed waited, waiting for the right moment to launch. This year has finally given us the freedom to develop and share all of our ideas with you. We hope our products for all ages help you to help your learners, but most of all we hope you have fun together. ENJOY!
